# Client users and permissions

> Invite people from your clients as client users, understand what they can and can't see, and learn what each organization role can do in Agency mode.

In Agency mode, people from your clients join Slate as **client users**. They work in their own workspace with your team, but they never see other clients or your agency's internal data.

## Why it matters

Clients can approve work, answer questions, and read updates inside Slate. Notes, money, health, and calls stay private to your agency.

## Organization roles in Agency mode

| Role | What they can do |
| - | - |
| **Owner** | Everything an Admin can do, plus turning Agency mode on or off. |
| **Admin** | Manages members, billing, and all clients. |
| **Member** | Agency staff. Sees the clients they're on as account manager, account director, or team member. |
| **Client** | Sees only the workspaces they're invited to. |

In an agency organization, Members who aren't admins don't see **Members** or **Usage** in Organization settings. See [Organization settings](/docs/settings/organization-settings) for the rest of the role rules.

### Who sees money

Retainers, project values, hourly rates, and contract files are visible to Owners, Admins, and the client's account manager and account director. Everyone else sees **Hidden**.

## What client users see

Client users see only the workspaces you invite them to. In those workspaces they can:

* Work on tasks with your team. A task waiting on them shows "‹Agency› needs: ‹what you need›".
* Get reminders from your team in their Slate inbox and by email.
* Open weekly updates you share. They appear in the workspace's **Artifacts**.
* See tasks created from your notes. Those tasks are visible to everyone in the workspace.

Client users never see:

* The Agency page, the Agency row in the workspace switcher, or Clients in Search.
* Your HQ workspace, other clients' workspaces, or the organization's member list and usage.
* Notes, money, contracts, health, client calls, or the client health report.

If a client user opens an Agency link, Slate shows "You don't have access to this page."

## Invite a client user

Only Owners and Admins can invite people from Organization settings.

1. Click the **Settings** icon on the sidebar rail and choose **Organization settings**.
2. Open **Members** and click **Invite people**.
3. Under **Who are you inviting?**, choose **Client**.
4. Add their email addresses.
5. Under **Workspaces**, pick the client's workspace. HQ isn't available for clients.
6. Pick their **Role in those workspaces**.
7. Click **Send invite**.

</Frame>

If you add an email from one of your agency domains, Slate suggests inviting that person as **Agency team** instead.

To invite your own staff, choose **Agency team**. Staff can use the Agency page and HQ.

## Make an existing member a client user

When members have a client's email domain, the **Members** page shows a banner, for example "3 members look like client users." Click **Review** to mark them in one step.

To change one person:

1. Open **Organization settings → Members**.
2. Change the person's **Organization role** to **Client**.
3. Click **Make Client** to confirm.

The person loses access to HQ, the Agency page, and the member list. They keep the workspaces they're already in. Setting someone to Client also removes them from client teams.

## Client admins

A client user can be an Admin of their own workspace. A client admin can invite more client users to the workspaces they're in. They can't change your agency staff. In the workspace's **Team** page, staff show as "Managed by ‹your organization›. Ask them to change it."

## Troubleshooting

| Problem | What to do |
| - | - |
| **Client** isn't offered in the invite dialog. | Agency mode must be on. See [Set up Agency mode](/docs/agency/set-up-agency-mode). |
| A client user can't see a workspace. | Invite them to that workspace from **Members**. |
| A staff member can't see a client. | Add them to the client's team. See [Set the team](/docs/agency/manage-clients#set-the-team). |
