# Organization settings

> Manage your organization's name, members, Slack connection, billing, and usage, and create new workspaces and organizations.

An organization groups your workspaces. Organization settings cover what they share: members, the Slack connection, billing, and usage.

## Why It Matters

Managing people and plans once for the organization saves repeating the work in every workspace. You can also see every workspace in one place.

## Where to Find It

1. Click the **Settings** icon (sliders) on the sidebar rail.
2. Choose **Organization settings**.

You can also click the **Organization settings** link at the top right of Workspace settings. Admins and Members see this menu item. Writers, Editors, and Designers don't.

| Group | Section | What it holds |
| - | - | - |
| Organization | **General** | Organization name and the list of workspaces |
| Organization | **Members** | Everyone in the organization and their workspace access |
| Integrations | **Communications** | The organization's Slack connection |
| Plan & usage | **Billing** | Your subscription and billing details |
| Plan & usage | **Usage** | Usage for the billing period and per-workspace limits |

## Organization Roles

Organization roles are separate from [workspace roles](/docs/settings/team-and-roles). The **Members** page shows each person's **Organization role**:

* **Owner** — the person who created the organization.
* **Admin** — "Manages organization settings, members and billing"
* **Member** — "Works in the workspaces they’re added to"

Only organization Owners and Admins can rename the organization, create workspaces, and manage organization members.

## General

* **Organization name** — up to 80 characters. Shown in the workspace switcher and in invitations. Edit the name, then click **Save changes**.
* **Workspaces** — lists every workspace in the organization. The one you're in is tagged **Current**. Click **Open settings** to open a workspace's settings, or **New workspace** to create one.

Uploading an organization logo, leaving the organization, and deleting the organization show "Not available yet."

## Members

The **Members** page lists everyone in the organization, across all its workspaces. The **Workspaces** column shows how many workspaces each person can access.

### Invite people

1. Click **Invite people**.
2. Add up to 20 email addresses. Press **Enter** or a comma after each one.
3. Under **Workspaces**, select one or more workspaces.
4. Under **Role in those workspaces**, pick a workspace role.
5. Optional: turn on **Also make them organization admins**.
6. Click **Send invite**.

### Manage workspace access

1. Click the person's workspace count (for example, **2 workspaces**). You can also open the **⋮** menu and click **Manage workspace access**.
2. In the panel, change their role in a workspace, remove them from one, or pick a workspace under **Add to a workspace**.
3. Click **Save changes**.

Adding someone to a new workspace sends them an invite to join it.

### Change an organization role

1. Click the person's role in the **Organization role** column.
2. Pick **Admin** or **Member**.
3. Click **Change role** to confirm.

The Owner's role can't be changed here.

### Remove someone from the organization

1. Open the **⋮** menu on the person's row.
2. Click **Remove from organization**.
3. Click **Remove member** to confirm.

The person loses access to the organization and all of its workspaces.

## Communications

Communications holds the Slack connection. The card reads "Connect Slack once for the organization, then choose which channels each workspace uses." Workspace Admins can make changes here.

* Click **Connect Slack** to install Slate in your Slack workspace.
* On the **Channel access** card, click **Add channel** to pair a channel with a code from Slack.
* Use the **⋮** menu on a Slack workspace to **Add another Slack workspace** or remove it.
* If a row shows **Reconnect needed**, click **Reconnect** to grant updated permissions.

For channel pairing, custom instructions, and notifications, see [Slack](/docs/integrations/slack).

## Billing and Usage

* **Billing** shows your subscription and links to the billing portal. Organization admins make changes there.
* **Usage** shows what the organization has used this billing period and lets you cap each workspace.

See [Billing and usage](/docs/settings/billing-and-usage) for details.

## Create a Workspace

1. Click the workspace logo at the top of the sidebar rail to open the workspace switcher.
2. Click **New workspace**.
3. Complete the setup screens. They match the [Quickstart](/docs/quickstart) steps.

The new workspace joins your current organization, and you become its Admin. You can also click **New workspace** under **General** → **Workspaces**.

<Note>Only organization Owners and Admins can create workspaces.</Note>

## Add an Organization

1. Open the workspace switcher.
2. Click **Switch** next to the organization name. **Switch** appears only if you belong to more than one organization.
3. Click **Add organization**.
4. Complete the setup screens.

Slate names the new organization from your website. You become its Owner. Rename the organization later under **General**.

## Troubleshooting

* **The organization name won't save.** Only organization Owners and Admins can rename the organization. Ask one of them.
* **I don't see Invite people or the ⋮ menu on Members.** You need the organization Admin or Owner role.
* **Creating a workspace fails.** Only organization Owners and Admins can create workspaces.
