Workflow Copilot is an AI assistant built into the workflow editor. Describe what you want, and Copilot reads your workflow, makes the change, and saves it to the draft.

Why it matters

  • Add, remove, or rearrange blocks by describing the change instead of configuring each block by hand.
  • Copilot edits the draft only. The live version keeps running until you publish.

Where to find it

  1. Open a workflow in the editor.
  2. Click the sparkle button in the bottom-left corner. Hover over the button to see the label Workflow Copilot.
The Copilot panel opens on the left side of the editor. The block library hides while the panel is open. Click the X in the panel header to close the panel.

Ask Copilot for a change

  1. Open the Copilot panel.
  2. Type your request in the message box. Or click a suggested prompt under What would you like to change? to copy it into the box.
  3. Press Enter to send. Press Shift+Enter to add a new line.
  4. Follow the progress in the panel. The panel header shows the workflow name and a status, such as Working, Needs input, or Ready.
  5. If Copilot asks a question or offers choices, answer in the panel so Copilot can continue.

Example requests

  • “Add a Google Search step before the LLM step and use the top results in the prompt.”
  • “Add a review and QA step before the final output.”
  • “Simplify this workflow and remove any unnecessary steps while keeping the same result.”

Point Copilot at a block

Select a block on the canvas before you send your request. Copilot treats the selected block as the one you mean by “this.” For example: “Rewrite the prompt in this block for B2B buyers.”

How Copilot applies changes

Copilot saves its changes directly to the workflow draft. There is no separate accept step. While Copilot works on the open workflow:
  • The canvas is locked, so you can’t add, move, or edit blocks.
  • The block settings panel shows Agent editing.
  • Autosave pauses.
When Copilot saves, the canvas reloads with the updated draft. Copilot doesn’t test or publish the workflow unless you ask it to. Before Copilot starts, it waits for your latest edits to save. If the save doesn’t finish, Slate shows Workflow draft not saved and keeps your message in the box. Check the save status and send the message again.

Review the changes

Copilot shows a workflow card in the conversation. The card reads Building pipeline while Copilot works and Workflow blueprint when the work is done. Click the card to expand it. The expanded card shows:
  • What changed: steps that were Added, Removed, Changed, Reordered, or Renamed, plus input changes
  • The list of steps in the workflow
  • The workflow’s inputs
Check the blocks on the canvas and test the workflow before you publish.

Undo a change

Copilot has no undo button. To go back:
  • Ask Copilot to reverse the change. For example: “Remove the step you just added.”
  • Or redraft a published version. See Redrafting a Version.
Redrafting replaces the whole draft with the selected version. Edits you made yourself since that version are also replaced.

Attach files

  1. Click the + button (Add attachment) below the message box.
  2. Choose Upload from computer or Attach from workspace.
  3. For Attach from workspace, pick a file in the Attach a file dialog. The dialog has tabs such as Knowledge base and Artifacts.
You can also drag a file onto the message box. Attachment limits:
  • Up to 3 files per message
  • Images up to 10 MB
  • Supported types: CSV, TSV, XLSX, PDF, TXT, MD, DOC, DOCX, PNG, JPG, JPEG, WEBP, and GIF

Use voice input

  1. Click the microphone button (Voice input) next to the send button.
  2. Allow microphone access if your browser asks.
  3. Speak your request.
  4. Click Accept and transcribe. Slate adds the text to the message box. To discard the recording, click Cancel recording.
  5. Edit the text if needed, then send it.
The microphone button appears only in browsers that support audio recording.

Stop and resume Copilot

  1. Click the stop button (Stop run) in the message box while Copilot is working.
  2. Copilot pauses at the next safe checkpoint. The panel shows “Run paused at a safe checkpoint. Send a message to resume.”
  3. Send a message when you want Copilot to continue.

Tips and troubleshooting

  • Conversation history: Copilot keeps the conversation for each workflow while your browser tab stays open. Reopen the panel to continue. A green dot on the Copilot button means a conversation is active.
  • Testing: Ask for a test explicitly, for example “Test this workflow with the keyword ‘crm for startups’.” Copilot doesn’t run tests on its own.
  • Publishing: Ask Copilot to publish only when the draft is ready. Publishing makes the draft the live version.
  • Not enough credits: If the workspace is low on credits, Copilot shows “Not enough credits to start this run” and keeps your request in the box. Click Add credits to open billing plans, then send again.
  • Voice input failed: Check that your browser has microphone permission for Slate.
